Larry McCaffrey’s working years were spent in the demanding craft of industrial sheet metal. This may not seem like the ideal avenue to a successful second career as a fine artist, but it’s worked out precisely that way for McCaffrey.
After retiring from a career in industrial metal work McCaffrey spent 12 years on his sailboat, cruising up and down the west coast. As the desire for land became stronger so did McCaffrey’s artist inclinations. Upon landing in Squim, Washington McCaffrey began to create his large stainless steel sculptures. The knowledge and craftsmanship of McCaffrey’s industrial background served him well and his stainless steel sculptures have elegant curves and movement. His contemporary sculptures are weather proof so they may be displayed both indoors and outdoors.
McCaffrey’s highly technical process begins with an idea gleaned from sketches. The next step is a full scale pattern from poster board pieces which are fit together. The cutting of the metal with plasma arc is followed by the forming. The welding with TIG (tungsten inert gas) or MIG (mechanical inert gas) comes next then the finishing or powder coating.
McCaffrey’s work can be found in collections across the world, from Washington to Boston to Australia.
